8 Step

The 8 Step is an evolution of the foundational 6 Step in breakdancing, where dancers move in a circular pattern, alternating leg movements to create a flowing sequence. What sets the 8 Step apart are the added two steps, which create more room for variation, balance, and rhythm. Bboy Crumbs designed the 8 Step to allow for more flexibility and style, giving dancers the ability to showcase their agility and creativity while still maintaining the essence of traditional breakdancing footwork.

For breakdancers, mastering the 8 Step can significantly elevate their performances. It allows for smoother transitions between different moves, giving routines more rhythm and flow. By incorporating the 8 Step, dancers can introduce complexity and variation into their footwork, which is particularly valuable during battles or performances where standing out is key. Additionally, the 8 Step challenges a dancer’s balance, speed, and coordination, making it a critical move for those looking to enhance their technical skill.

To execute the 8 Step, it’s important to break down each movement carefully and practice slowly to build precision. Below is a step-by-step guide to mastering this technique:

  • Starting Position: Begin in a neutral footwork stance with your hands and feet on the ground. Your body should be positioned low to the ground, ready to move in any direction.
  • Step 1: Move your left leg in front of your right, rather than behind as in the standard 6 Step. This first step sets the tone for the unique variations found in the 8 Step.
  • Step 2: Shift your weight and bring your right leg forward, crossing it over your left leg. This movement transitions you into a new position while preparing for further foot switches.
  • Step 3: Transition by swinging your left leg behind your right knee. Staying low during this step is crucial for maintaining speed and control, as this sequence becomes more challenging as you move forward.
  • Steps 4-8: Continue to cycle through these movements, alternating leg positions while incorporating twists and weight shifts. The final steps resemble the traditional 6 Step positions but with the added flair and transitions unique to the 8 Step. The cycle concludes when you return to your original starting position, ready to either repeat the sequence or transition into another move.
